Description
Mongoose Gold (barn name GG) is a pioneer in the Friends of Ferdinand ex-racehorse retraining program. In 2021, Friends of Ferdinand launched the Broodmare Bunch, a new facet of their retraining program focusing on assisting broodmares in finding new careers as riding horses, after their time being a racehorse and a mother are over. This is one of the first, if not the first, Thoroughbred program in the US to focus on broodmares, who can often be at-risk when their breeding careers are over.
GG is the first graduate from the Broodmare Bunch who is ready to find her new home! Born in 2004, she was a successful racehorse, winning 8 of 33 races and banking over $250k in her career. She then retired from the track, and had 6 foals, including two very successful runners who have earned over $100k each. She was responsibly retired from breeding by her owners, who look forward to her enjoying her golden years with a person who can dote on her.
Her ideal adopter would be someone who likes to spend time with her. GG likes attention, and she really thrives when kept on a regular routine. She would be happy being a horse that lives at a private farm or at a boarding barn. The more you do with her, the happier she is. She doesn’t seem to be the type that wants to travel the world but likes to show off her moves in places she is familiar with. She has been restarted under English tack. She is vet cleared to jump (we would recommend small to medium jumps due to her age) and is a good all-around type who moves nice enough to also focus on dressage.
GG is a big, beautiful mare and has some funny quirks that will endear her to you even more. One of her funniest habits ins smacking her lips together like she’s clapping – she does this at the most random times. (There is a video of her showing off some of her silly faces on the Friends of Ferdinand website.) The vet has confirmed she isn’t in any pain or discomfort, but it’s just one of her silly habits – we enjoy her and her personality!
GG is available for adoption through Friends of Ferdinand Inc, a Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance accredited organization that specializes in re-training off track Thoroughbreds. All the horses in our retraining program come fully vetted, with test rides for qualified adopters, and with 30-day trial periods.
